Baby Jogging
Snowden experienced a whole new world this evening. The story starts on Sunday when we purchased (finally!) a baby jogger. Snowcat, the sobriquet of the moment, is now big enough to get strapped into another container and trundled about the world. The jogger sat shiny and pristine in Eliza’s office where it did little other than taking up space and emitting curious rubber smells until this afternoon when we decided to take Snowden for a little jog.
The plan was for Eliza to drive to the gym and for Snowden and I to run and meet her. We bundled Snowden up and secured her in the jogger to test the harness. A couple of blankets later we found an arrangement that would keep her secure and somewhat comfortable. From the start Snowden was not amendable to this new situation. As with most of the carrying cases that limit the flailing about of her arms, the baby jogger met with her infant resistance. After a minute or two of sitting in the cursed contraption she would begin crying and hiccupping with indignant intensity. Not a good omen. Still, we had to give it a go.
Eliza left and Snowden and I hung out playing with her growing menagerie of animal toys. After this started to become boring and Snowden started fussing I decided it was time to bite the bullet and put her in the jogger. The outcome was predictable. By the time the last buckle was clicked she was in full crying mode. I hastily grabbed my keys and wheeled her down the hallway and into the elevator.
Once she started moving the crying slowed, replaced by intermittent yelps. By the time we exited the apartment she was silent. Through the little plastic window in the top of the jogger I could see her waving her arms and flexing her fingers, a sure sign of contentment. We ran up a short hill and stopped at an intersection, waiting for the light to change I checked on Snowden. She was wide eyed and very serious looking. She maintained this countenance until falling asleep about a mile later.
We ran over broken sidewalks and on forested trails, over bridges and under freeways always heading straight in the setting sun (sort of Tolkienesqe direction if you think about it) until we reached the gym and Eliza. Snowden slept most of the way. She woke when Eliza met us outside the gym and stayed awake for another 30 minutes of walking.
I think that the warming weather and baby jogger will add a whole new way of enjoying our new baby girl.
