6 Weeks

Snowden is now 6 weeks old, a big milestone! All of the sudden she seemed to turn the corner-she’s no longer a newborn, now she’s firmly in her babyhood. I think I’m beginning to glimpse a bit of her personality. Of course, we’ve seen a certain temperment since the first few days: alert, very present and interested, active and communicative. Now though she smiles and looks into our faces longer. I see her move her mouth while I am talking to her or singing like she wants to speak herself. She looks pleased with herself when she does make a vocalization. She’s also interested in objects that we present to her: her valentine balloon from Patti and Terry, her stuffed dog, her stuffed owl that makes a who whooing noise. I think she might even recognize “the ants go marching” song because I can get a smile every time I start to sing it, even if she’s unhappy at the time. She smiles nearly all the time she’s awake and it is so fun to watch her!

Today she woke up at 5:30 to eat and then went back to sleep after about 1/2 hour. She woke again at 8:45 and I had already had a shower and breakfast. We went through the usual routine of a feeding and a diaper change, she got her face washed as well as a sit bath in the sink after the diaper. Next we walk through the house opening the blinds as usual and I describe what is going on outside. After puttering around a bit, she started to get tired and fuss so I put her in the Moby wrap where she promptly falls asleep most mornings after she’s been up about and hour and a half. At 11am we met a friend and her 3 month old baby at Greenlake to walk despite the off and on sleet. Our walk was dry and Snowden cried for about 5 mins, sucked on my finger to quiet herself for about 5 mins and then fell asleep for the rest of the walk. Snowden woke up when, on the way back to the car, I stopped in at Super Jock and Jill to chat with some girlfriends. Snowden was passed around and charmed everyone with her smiles (her initial look of skepticism at the strangers was wiped away as soon as I sang her the first verse of “the ants go marching”). Next, I fed her in the front seat of the car, pleased that I am becoming more and more adept at feeding on the go, and figured since she was so happy I could probably manage to go to Trader Joe’s. At the store, in her Baby Bjorn, she just looked around, seemingly interested in everything and occasionally looking up at me and “talking”. I can’t get over how pleasant she is to be with! I really enjoy her company. Not only am I in love with her and every minute I get to spend with her, mothering is made even better because she reciprocates the interest-she seems as fascinated by me as I am by her.

She’s napping now and I should lay down for a bit too . . . and that’s an adventurous day in the life of Snowden and Eliza.

Happy 34th Birthday Sean!

Dear Sean, Happy Birthday!

You are at work today, which is no way to spend your birthday. You always honor holidays and love to have a special occasion. Our anniversary was overshadowed by the special occasion of our lives, Snowden’s birth. Her birth was more momentous and wonderful than getting married don’t you think? (Although if we hadn’t gotten married, Snowden’s birth was unlikely, since we would have split up if we hadn’t made the commitment to be together for the rest of our lives). But I want to make sure you know, on your birthday, how special you are to me.

As our friends and siblings approach their 30th year, or find themselves reflecting on the fact that they are already half way through this decade of “adulthood”, I hope you look at your life this birthday and feel satisfied and accomplished. I look at your life, and even though I know you wish you were and arctic explorer or a climber of the world’s highest mountains or a international ski guide, I am thankful to see what I think are a man’s greatest accomplishments: having become a husband and a father. As your wife I have great trust in you; I find comfort and love in our relationship. In the first 3 weeks of Snowden’s life I see that she already finds comfort in you and trusts you. I hope you are proud to be the person Snowden and I love-you didn’t become that person without 34 years of experiences that shaped your character so I wouldn’t wish you any younger.

New Family Photo

I hope that your 34th year, one in which I know most all of your time and energy will be spent being a father to Snowden, at the very beginning of her life, will be intensely gratifying and wonderful! I love you, Eliza
